The Analyze 10-Year Financial Chart Trends prompt (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok)

Select a watchlist or portfolio ticker to pre-fill placeholders, or copy and replace manually.

You are a senior equity research analyst. Analyze the long-term financial trends for [COMPANY_NAME] (ticker: [TICKER]) over the last [YEARS] fiscal years using [CHART_DATA]. [CHART_DATA] may be pasted yearly values or attached chart screenshots. Treat it as the primary source.

## Context
This is educational research, not financial advice. Do not suggest buying, selling, or holding the stock, and do not forecast the share price. Describe what the data shows. If a value is unreadable or missing, say so instead of estimating it.

## Required Analysis

### Part 1 - Data Check
- List each series provided, the years it covers, and the fiscal year end.
- Flag gaps, obvious one-offs (acquisitions, divestitures, write-downs), stock splits, or restatements that could distort the trend.

### Part 2 - Revenue Trend
- CAGR over the full window, the last 5 years and the last 3 years.
- Years where revenue fell, and by how much.
- Is growth speeding up, steady, or slowing?

### Part 3 - Margin Trend
| Year | Gross Margin | Operating Margin | Net Margin | FCF Margin |
- Are margins expanding, flat, or compressing over the window?
- Is there operating leverage (operating income growing faster than revenue)?

### Part 4 - Cash Conversion
- Free cash flow vs net income each year. Flag years where FCF was below 70% of net income and give the likely reason (capex, working capital, stock-based compensation) if the data shows it.

### Part 5 - Per-Share View
- Shares outstanding trend: dilution or buybacks, and the total % change over the window.
- Revenue per share and FCF per share CAGR vs the company-level CAGR. Explain any gap.

### Part 6 - Balance Sheet Direction
- Cash, total debt and net debt at the start and end of the window, and the direction in between.

### Part 7 - Inflection Points
| Year | Metric | What Changed | Filing to Check (e.g. that year's 10-K MD&A) |
List the 3-5 biggest turning points in the decade.

### Part 8 - Questions for the Filings
List 5 specific questions the charts raise that only the 10-K, 10-Q or earnings call can answer.

### Part 9 - Visual Verification & Chart Follow-Up
- Name 2-3 charts worth checking over a longer history or by quarter to confirm the read (e.g. quarterly gross margin, share count, FCF vs net income).
- Provide the Chartloom research link for the interactive charts: https://www.chartloom.com/c/ticker/[TICKER]

## Output Format
Tables, headers, bullets. Neutral, evidence-driven language. Do not provide investment advice. Avoid the words "buy", "sell", "hold", "recommendation", or "price target".

**Variables:** If any [BRACKETED] placeholders above are not set, ask the user for each missing value before proceeding.

Variables

Replace these placeholders in the prompt with your own values.

PlaceholderDescriptionExample
[COMPANY_NAME]Full legal or common company name.Apple Inc.
[TICKER]Stock ticker symbol.AAPL
[YEARS]Number of fiscal years in the chart window.10
[CHART_DATA]Yearly figures or chart screenshots. This is the primary source for the read.Annual revenue, margins, free cash flow, and shares outstanding

How to use this prompt

Replace the bracketed fields, then paste yearly values or attach chart screenshots as the chart data. Open the ticker's charts free on Chartloom: about 10 years of annual data and 8 charts per company on the free plan; 35+ years annual, 15 years quarterly, and 100+ charts on Pro. Copy or screenshot the values straight into the prompt, and check any turning point against that year's filing.

Tips

  • A single 10-K shows a short statement history, and the five-year selected financial data table is no longer required. A ten-year chart is how those filings get stitched into one trend.
  • Compare the 3-year, 5-year, and full-window growth rates before describing growth as steady or slowing.
  • Per-share trends can diverge from company-level trends when the share count changes. Read both.
  • If a screenshot figure is unreadable, leave it blank. The prompt tells the model to say so instead of estimating it.
  • Free Chartloom charts cover about 10 years of annual data. Pro is where the same series extends to 35+ years annual or 15 years quarterly.

When to use this prompt

Reading whether revenue growth sped up or slowed across a full decade

Checking whether margins expanded with revenue or compressed through the cycle

Comparing free cash flow with net income before treating earnings as cash

Seeing whether buybacks or dilution changed the per-share picture
