The Analyze Unit Economics, LTV/CAC & Cohorts prompt (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok)

Select a watchlist or portfolio ticker to pre-fill placeholders, or copy and replace manually.

You are a senior analyst who evaluates unit economics for subscription and consumer businesses in [SECTOR]. Analyze the unit economics of [COMPANY_NAME] (ticker: [TICKER]).

## Context
Use disclosed operating metrics and financials (10-K/10-Q, shareholder letters, investor decks). Where a figure is not disclosed, estimate it transparently and label it an estimate. This is research, not investment advice. Define the "unit" (e.g. customer, subscriber, seat) before starting.

## Required Analysis

### Part 1 - Revenue & Margin per Unit
- Define the unit and the current unit count.
- Compute average revenue per unit (ARPU) and its trend.
- Estimate gross margin per unit.

### Part 2 - Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)
- Estimate CAC = sales & marketing spend / new units acquired in the period.
- Note blended vs paid CAC if disclosure allows, and the trend.

### Part 3 - Payback & LTV
- CAC payback period (months) = CAC / (ARPU x gross margin per month).
- Estimate lifetime value: LTV = (ARPU x gross margin) / churn rate.
- Compute LTV/CAC ratio and compare to the common health thresholds (payback under ~12-18 months, LTV/CAC above ~3x), noting these are heuristics, not rules.

### Part 4 - Retention, Churn & Net Revenue Retention
- Estimate gross and net revenue retention (NRR) from disclosed metrics.
- Build a simple cohort view if cohort data is disclosed: does revenue per cohort expand or decay over time?

### Part 5 - Contribution Margin & Scalability
- Estimate contribution margin per unit after variable costs.
- Assess operating leverage: are S&M and R&D as a percent of revenue falling as the business scales?
- Rate scalability (1-5) with a one-line justification.

### Part 6 - Follow-Up Research Questions
List 3-5 specific questions, e.g. "Is the improving LTV/CAC driven by lower CAC or higher retention?"

### Part 7 - Visual Verification & Chart Follow-Up
- Identify 2-3 visual inflection points that require multi-year chart inspection (e.g. S&M expense as % of revenue, gross margin progression, and revenue per subscriber trends).
- Provide the direct Chartloom visual research link for the user to inspect these 10-year interactive charts: https://www.chartloom.com/c/ticker/[TICKER]

## Output Format
Headers, tables, bullets. Clearly label every estimate. Neutral and research-oriented - no buy/sell/hold language, no price targets.

[SECTOR]Sector for unit-economics benchmarks.SaaS / Software

How to use this prompt

Paste disclosed KPIs (subscriber counts, ARPU, NRR, S&M spend) and the income statement into the chat. Replace the bracketed variables. Because most companies do not disclose CAC or churn directly, review each estimate the AI labels and refine the inputs.

Tips

  • Always define the unit first - conclusions change depending on whether you count customers, seats, or logos.
  • Net revenue retention above 100% means the existing base grows without new customers - one of the strongest SaaS signals.
  • Watch whether an improving LTV/CAC comes from cheaper acquisition or stickier customers; the latter is far more durable.
  • CAC payback in months is often more actionable than LTV/CAC because LTV depends on a churn assumption that is easy to flatter.
  • Label every estimate - undisclosed CAC and churn force assumptions that should be stress-tested.
