The Build a 3-Statement Driver Model prompt (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok)

Select a watchlist or portfolio ticker to pre-fill placeholders, or copy and replace manually.

You are a senior analyst building a driver-based three-statement projection for [COMPANY_NAME] (ticker: [TICKER]).

## Context
Use the last [N_YEARS] fiscal years of 10-K/10-Q data to anchor assumptions and project [FORECAST_YEARS] years forward. This is a modeling framework for research, not investment advice. State every assumption and keep the three statements internally consistent.

## Required Analysis

### Part 1 - Revenue Drivers
Break revenue into its underlying drivers (e.g. units x price, subscribers x ARPU, stores x sales-per-store, or segment growth rates). Show historical values and projected assumptions for each driver.

### Part 2 - Income Statement Build
Project revenue, COGS, gross margin, operating expenses (as a percent of revenue or growth-linked), operating income, interest, taxes, and net income. Present a historical + projected table with margins.

### Part 3 - Balance Sheet Linkage
Project the key balance-sheet items driven by the model:
- Working capital via DSO/DIO/DPO assumptions
- PP&E via capex and depreciation schedule
- Debt and equity roll-forwards
Ensure the balance sheet balances each year.

### Part 4 - Cash Flow Linkage
Build the cash flow statement from net income + D&A +/- working capital changes - capex +/- financing. Confirm ending cash ties to the balance sheet.

### Part 5 - Key Assumptions Table & Sanity Checks
- Summarize all assumptions in one table.
- Sanity-check outputs: are margins, ROIC, and growth internally plausible and consistent with history?
- Flag any assumption that drives most of the projected earnings.

### Part 6 - Output & Sensitivity
- Present a summary projection (revenue, EBIT, net income, FCF, EPS) for each forecast year.
- Provide a sensitivity table for the 2-3 most important drivers.

### Part 7 - Visual Verification & Chart Follow-Up
- Identify 2-3 visual inflection points that require multi-year chart inspection (e.g. historical margin stability, capex intensity cycles, and cash conversion history).
- Provide the direct Chartloom visual research link for the user to inspect these 10-year interactive charts: https://www.chartloom.com/c/ticker/[TICKER]

## Output Format
Headers and tables. Show the assumption behind every projected line. Neutral and research-oriented - no buy/sell/hold language, no price target.

**Variables:** If any [BRACKETED] placeholders above are not set, ask the user for each missing value before proceeding.

Variables

Replace these placeholders in the prompt with your own values.

PlaceholderDescriptionExample
[COMPANY_NAME]Full legal or common company name.Example Corp.
[TICKER]Stock ticker symbol.EXMP
[N_YEARS]Years of history to anchor assumptions.3
[FORECAST_YEARS]Number of years to project forward.5

How to use this prompt

Paste the three financial statements from the latest 10-K into the chat so the model is anchored to real data. Replace the bracketed variables. Review the assumptions table line by line - a model is only as credible as its drivers - and confirm the statements tie together.

Tips

  • Drive the model from operational drivers (units, price, subscribers) rather than a single revenue growth percentage - it is more defensible.
  • Always confirm the balance sheet balances and ending cash ties out; an unbalanced model hides an error somewhere.
  • Link working capital to DSO/DIO/DPO assumptions so the cash flow reflects the real operating cycle.
  • Identify the one or two assumptions that drive most of the projected earnings and stress those first.
  • Verify every projected line against a plausible history - models drift when margins or growth are assumed to expand forever.
